We buy the scrap metal from strip-outs and decommissioning
For strip-out contractors, main contractors and site managers: skips and cages on site, metals kept apart as plant comes out, paperwork for every load, and payment by bank transfer.

- Licensed dealerA Wigan Council scrap metal site licence, on the public register.
- Paid by bank transferStraight into your account, with a weight and grade record for each load.
- Graded, not lumped inEach metal priced for what it is, not as the cheapest thing in the pile.
- Paperwork doneWaste transfer notes for every collection, so your records stay complete.
Resilient Contracting is not a strip-out contractor. We are the licensed scrap metal dealer that takes the metal once it is out: plant rooms, stainless ducting and hoods, structural steelwork, cable runs, switchgear housings, pipework and racking. Your team does the dismantling. We make sure the metal is sorted, collected and paid for.
On most strip-outs, metal is the one waste with a value, but only while it stays sorted. Red steelwork coming down off the scaffold, stainless duct stacked in the yard and cable pulled from the tray are three grades, priced three ways.
Grades
What we take from a strip-out
- 01
Structural steelwork
Beams, columns, purlins, stairs and platforms, painted or galvanised, cut to load safely.
- 02
Stainless ducting and hoods
Canopies and duct runs, kept apart from galvanised duct, which grades as steel.
- 03
Plant and vessels
Tanks, air handling units, fans, pumps and frames, once isolated, drained and safe.
- 04
Cable runs
Armoured and power cable, sub-mains and tails, with copper and aluminium kept apart.
- 05
Switchgear and busbar
Housings, panel steel and busbar, once disconnected by your electricians.
- 06
Pipework and racking
Copper and steel pipe, brass valves, cast iron, pallet racking and cable tray.
Price
How strip-out scrap is valued
Every load is weighed, graded and priced against the market on the day, which for copper, aluminium and the nickel in stainless means the London Metal Exchange. Clean, single-metal loads grade highest. Steel left on stainless or copper pulls the price down.
Logistics count too. A run of roll-on/roll-off skips on a big job is priced differently from a few cages on a short one, so we agree containers and lifts before work starts. Each load comes with its weight, grade and price in writing.
Typical strip-out metal
- Universal beams, columns and channel
- Stainless kitchen and process extraction
- Air handling unit casings and fan housings
- Steel wire armoured (SWA) cable
- Copper busbar and earth bar
- Copper pipe, cylinders and brass valves
- Cast iron soil pipe and radiators
- Pallet racking and mezzanine steel
- Redundant tanks, emptied and cleaned
Deal with these before the skip
- Lagging or panels that may hold asbestos (check the survey; a specialist removes it first)
- Chillers and AC units still charged with refrigerant (recovered by a certified engineer first)
- Transformers, tanks or pipework holding oil (tell us first; it needs a specialist route)
- Lead-acid UPS batteries (tell us first; it needs a specialist route)
- Fluorescent tubes and light fittings (electrical waste, collected separately)
Collection
How we set up on site
Set up around your site and the amount you produce, so each metal stays in its own grade until it is collected.
Roll-on/roll-off skips
For steelwork, plant and duct, placed where your telehandler can reach and exchanged as they fill.
Lockable cages
For cable, busbar, copper and brass, which attract thieves. Locked until the load goes.
A segregation plan
Agreed with the site manager: which metal goes where, labelled containers, and who to call when one is full.
Why it matters
Why segregating on site pays
Once metals are mixed in a skip, nobody unpicks them. Stainless duct thrown in with steel is paid as steel. Copper cable in the general skip costs you instead of earning. Sorting from day one protects the job’s value.
It keeps the main contractor’s records clean too. Each load leaves with a waste transfer note, and we record its weight and grade as the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires. We pay the business that owns the scrap by bank transfer, once its name and address are verified.

How it works
From a phone call to money in the bank
Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.
Call or send photos
What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.
Collection arranged
A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.
Weighed and graded
Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.
Paid by bank transfer
Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

Are you a strip-out contractor?
No. Strip-out contractors and main contractors do the dismantling. We are the licensed scrap metal dealer working alongside them: we plan the skips and cages, keep the metals apart as they come out, collect the loads and pay for the metal. If you run strip-outs, we can be your scrap buyer on each job.
Who gets paid for the scrap on a strip-out?
Whoever owns it under the contract, so settle that before work starts. The scrap value might stay with the client, go to the strip-out contractor or be set against the cost of the works. We pay the business we buy from, after verifying its name and address, by bank transfer. Cash payments for scrap metal are against the law.
What has to happen before plant is scrapped?
It must be isolated, drained and made safe. Refrigerant is recovered by a certified engineer, oil and product are drained, and the asbestos survey is checked before anyone cuts lagged pipework or panels. If something still holds oil, chemicals or batteries, tell us first: it needs a specialist route, not the scrap skip.
Can you take the non-metal waste from the job too?
Metal is what we buy. Plasterboard, timber, packaging and general strip-out waste cost money to move, but our brokerage side can often arrange them through registered collectors, so you are not chasing several firms. Tell us what else is coming out, roughly how much, and when each phase is due to start.
Do you collect from site?
Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.
Can you work alongside our main contractor on a strip-out?
Yes. Strip-outs and decommissioning are a big part of what we do. We agree where the skips and cages go, how metals will be segregated as the plant comes out, and when loads are collected, then provide the paperwork for every load so the site’s waste records are complete.
Do we get paperwork for our scrap?
Yes. Scrap metal leaving a business is waste in law, so the duty of care applies and each transfer needs a waste transfer note, kept for at least two years. You also get a record of the weight, grade and price of what we buy.
