Scrap metal collection and buying in St Helens

Copper was smelted at Ravenhead in the 1780s. Today we buy scrap copper, cable, stainless and steel from businesses across the borough and collect it from site.

St Helens has a longer history with metal than most people realise. Around 1780 the Parys Mine Company built a copper smelter at Ravenhead for Anglesey ore, under Thomas Williams, whom Matthew Boulton called the ‘copper king’. The Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows, founded in the 1830s, built locomotives for much of its life and closed in 2002, and Earlestown’s Viaduct Foundry became the London and North Western Railway’s wagon works.

The borough is still full of firms that make, fix and fit things in metal. Resilient Contracting buys their copper, cable, brass, aluminium, stainless and steel, collected from your site and graded metal by metal. You are paid by bank transfer, and each purchase is logged with your company’s details, as the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires.

Sutton, Sherdley and the M62 estates

South of the centre, the Sherdley Road estate and Sherdley Business Park, Mere Grange on the Linkway and Sutton Fold on Lancots Lane sit close to junction 7 of the M62, with the Abbotsfield and Reginald Road parks nearby and Bold Industrial Estate near junction 8. Manufacturers, trade firms and contractors here produce steel offcuts, copper pipe, cable and swarf.

Closer in are Pocket Nook, Parr and the Chalon Way estate, and Rainford Industrial Estate on Mill Lane includes a maker of fabricated metal products. Out east, the Sankey Valley Industrial Estate at Earlestown is a short run from junction 23 of the M6. Demolition in the town centre has been planned around a high recycling target, and smaller jobs deserve the same care: steel, cable and pipework from a strip-out should be sorted and sold.

How it works

From a phone call to money in the bank

Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.

  1. Call or send photos

What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.

  2. Collection arranged

A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.

  3. Weighed and graded

Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.

  4. Paid by bank transfer

Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

How selling your scrap works

FAQs

Selling scrap in St Helens: questions

All questions

We’re a plumbing and heating firm in Sutton. How should we keep our scrap copper?

Separately, and as clean as you can. Copper pipe with no solder, fittings or insulation is graded higher than pipe with joints, paint or brass still attached. Keep copper cylinders on their own, brass valves and fittings in their own bucket, and steel radiators and boilers apart from both. A couple of lidded drums and a cage make that easy.

We look after maintenance at a large plant in St Helens. Can you take the scrap from a shutdown?

Yes. Shutdowns release a lot of metal in a short time: old pipework, valves, motors, cable, cable tray and steelwork. We can place roll-on roll-off containers and cages before the work starts, agree how each metal is kept apart, and collect as they fill. Anything that held process chemicals or oil must be cleaned or declared first, because contaminated metal may need a specialist route.

How do I get today’s price for my scrap?

Call 01942 906041 or send us a few photos through the quote form with a rough weight or volume. Scrap prices follow the metals markets and change from day to day, so we price on what you actually have at the time, by grade, rather than quoting a figure that could be out of date tomorrow.

How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?

By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.

Do you collect from site?

Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.

What have you got? (tick any)
For example: about two tonnes of armoured cable drum ends, ready now. Or: a strip-out starting next month with stainless ducting and steelwork, skips needed on site.
A couple of photos of the scrap, close enough to see what it is, help us price it.
