Scrap metal collection and buying in Leigh

Leigh has a long history of making cable, and its firms still produce plenty of scrap metal. We buy it from businesses in Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley, Lowton and Golborne.

Cable is part of Leigh’s past. In 1944, workers at the town’s Anchor Cable Works, later part of BICC, were photographed stripping the insulation from scrap cable so the metal could be used again. BICC’s former cable factory on West Bridgewater Street is now Bridgewater Business Park. The lesson still holds: the copper inside cable is worth recovering when it is sorted and sold properly.

Resilient Contracting buys scrap cable, copper, brass, aluminium, stainless and steel across the east of the Wigan borough, collecting from your unit or your job and paying by bank transfer. Electricians, plumbers, heating engineers and small fabricators often hold more saleable metal than they realise, so send us photos and we’ll tell you how to sort it.

Bolt works, winding engines and the units that followed

Atherton had eight nut and bolt makers by 1853, and the Collier Brook Bolt Works on Bag Lane, dating from 1856, is now listed. At Astley Green, the colliery’s 3,300 horsepower Yates & Thom winding engine and 1912 headgear survive as a museum. Today the metal comes from smaller places, such as the employment areas on Mort Lane and Lower Green Lane in Tyldesley, Bolton Road in Atherton and the Astley Park estate off Chaddock Lane.

In Leigh itself, Bridgewater Business Park and the streets around Brewery Lane and Mather Lane hold trade and workshop units. Towards the M6 are the refurbished Lowton Business Park on Newton Road and the 21 units of Golborne Enterprise Park on Kid Glove Road. For firms this size, a lockable cage suits cable and copper best, because both attract thieves.

How it works

From a phone call to money in the bank

Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.

  1. Call or send photos

What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.

  2. Collection arranged

A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.

  3. Weighed and graded

Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.

  4. Paid by bank transfer

Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

How selling your scrap works

FAQs

Selling scrap in Leigh: questions

All questions

Where should our Atherton firm keep its scrap cable?

Off the van and under lock. A lockable cage inside a unit or a secure yard is far safer than a van or an open skip. Keep armoured, unarmoured copper and data cable in separate bags or sections of the cage, with no general rubbish in it. When the cage is full, call us: we collect, grade each type and pay by bank transfer.

We’re clearing out an old mill building in Leigh. What metal is worth recovering?

Often more than you’d expect. Redundant cast iron pipe and radiators, steel from old mezzanines and extensions, copper cable, lead flashing and brass fittings all have a scrap value. Keep each metal apart as it comes out. Leave lagged pipework alone until it has been checked for asbestos, and tell us about anything that held oil before it is cut up.

How do I get today’s price for my scrap?

Call 01942 906041 or send us a few photos through the quote form with a rough weight or volume. Scrap prices follow the metals markets and change from day to day, so we price on what you actually have at the time, by grade, rather than quoting a figure that could be out of date tomorrow.

How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?

By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.

Do you collect from site?

Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.

What have you got? (tick any)
For example: about two tonnes of armoured cable drum ends, ready now. Or: a strip-out starting next month with stainless ducting and steelwork, skips needed on site.
A couple of photos of the scrap, close enough to see what it is, help us price it.
