Scrap metal collection and buying in Bolton
Bolton built steam engines and spinning machinery for the world, and its estates are still full of engineers and fabricators. We buy their scrap metal and collect it from site.
- Licensed dealerA Wigan Council scrap metal site licence, on the public register.
- Paid by bank transferStraight into your account, with a weight and grade record for each load.
- Graded, not lumped inEach metal priced for what it is, not as the cheapest thing in the pile.
- Paperwork doneWaste transfer notes for every collection, so your records stay complete.
Bolton has a serious engineering record. The firm that became Hick Hargreaves built engines at the Soho Ironworks from 1833 until it closed in 2002, and Dobson & Barlow’s Kay Street works made textile machinery and, in the First World War, shells, grenades and naval mines. Engineering still matters here: MBDA has invested heavily in missile systems manufacturing in the town, and machinists, fabricators and electrical contractors fill the smaller estates.
Resilient Contracting buys the scrap they produce. Cable, copper, brass and stainless are graded separately, steel goes in an open skip and swarf in lidded bins. We collect from your unit, take your company’s name and address for our records, as every licensed dealer must, and pay into your bank account.

From The Valley to Blackrod: where Bolton’s scrap comes from
North of the centre, along the A666 in the area known as The Valley, the Riverside Industrial Estate and Waters Meeting Business Park hold engineering and trade firms, with more units planned on the last plot at Waters Meeting. To the east, the Boundary Industrial Estate in Breightmet and the council’s Tonge Bridge workshops house manufacturers, including makers of power components and windows. Expect aluminium section, copper and cable offcuts.
Towards the M61, Farnworth Industrial Estate, the Moses Gate workshops and the Europa and Fishbrook estates on Stoneclough Road in Kearsley hold refrigeration, door and building products firms. Out west are Westhoughton Industrial Estate, the steel portal-frame workshops of Dodd Lane Business Park and the Blackrod estates near junction 6. Refrigeration and heating engineers deserve a mention: their copper pipe is worth keeping apart from everything else.

How it works
From a phone call to money in the bank
Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.
Call or send photos
What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.
Collection arranged
A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.
Weighed and graded
Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.
Paid by bank transfer
Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.
We’re a small engineering firm in Kearsley. Should we keep a cage on site or just call when we have a load?
Either works. If you turn out copper, brass or stainless every week, a cage or lidded bin keeps it secure and separate, and we collect when it’s full. If scrap only builds up when a job finishes, call us or send photos then. It comes down to volume and space, so tell us what a typical month looks like and we’ll suggest the simpler option.
We install and repair refrigeration and air conditioning around Bolton. What scrap can we sell?
Mostly copper and brass. Old pipework and offcuts are worth more with the insulation stripped off and kept apart from brass valves and fittings, while aluminium and steel brackets go separately. Whole units that still hold refrigerant are different: the gas must be recovered by a qualified engineer and the units go as electrical waste, so tell us what you have first.
How do I get today’s price for my scrap?
Call 01942 906041 or send us a few photos through the quote form with a rough weight or volume. Scrap prices follow the metals markets and change from day to day, so we price on what you actually have at the time, by grade, rather than quoting a figure that could be out of date tomorrow.
How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?
By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.
Do you collect from site?
Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.
