Scrap metal collection and buying in Bury

Foundries and paper machines made Bury’s name. Today we buy scrap from the engineers, fabricators and contractors working there, and collect it from site.

Bury built the machines other towns ran on. Robert Hall & Sons made looms at the Hope Foundry, Smith & Law of Bury built the paper machine installed at Holcombe Mill in 1885, and the East Lancashire Paper Mill in Radcliffe employed more than 1,200 people at its height before it closed in 2001. Packaging is still made in Ramsbottom, and the borough’s estates are busy with engineers, fabricators and building trades.

Resilient Contracting collects and buys scrap from Bury businesses: cable and copper in cages, stainless and brass in their own bins, and steel in a skip. Each load is weighed and graded, the seller’s identity is checked under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, and you are paid into your bank account, never in cash.

Radcliffe, Whitefield and the estates along the Irwell

In Radcliffe, the Dale Industrial Estate off the bypass, Eton Business Park and the units at Sunnybank Mill on Cams Lane hold engineering and trade firms within reach of junction 2 of the M66 or junction 17 of the M60. Between Radcliffe and the town centre is the Warth Industrial Estate on Radcliffe Road, while the Bridge Trading Estate sits beside the Irwell on Bolton Street, with Woolfold to the west and Blackford and Riverside on Manchester Road.

In the south of the borough, Park 17 on Moss Lane in Whitefield sits by junction 17, and the refurbished Mountheath Trading Estate in Prestwich has 28 units. Prestwich is also being regenerated, with the Longfield Centre making way for a new village centre. Clearances like that release steel frames, cable and ductwork, all of it worth separating on site.

How it works

From a phone call to money in the bank

Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.

  1. Call or send photos

What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.

  2. Collection arranged

A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.

  3. Weighed and graded

Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.

  4. Paid by bank transfer

Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

How selling your scrap works

FAQs

Selling scrap in Bury: questions

All questions

Our unit in Radcliffe produces aluminium offcuts every week. Is that enough to sell?

Usually, yes, especially if it’s kept clean. Aluminium is graded by type: extrusions, sheet, castings and turnings are each priced differently, and painted section is kept apart from mill finish. A bin or bulk bag for each type builds into a load faster than you’d think. Send us a photo of a typical week’s offcuts and we’ll tell you how best to store them.

We have an old machine to scrap at our works in Bury. What do you need to know?

What it is, roughly how big and heavy it is, and how we get to it. It must be drained of oil and coolant and disconnected by a competent electrician before collection, and any lagging should be checked for asbestos. Cast iron beds, steel frames, electric motors and brass parts are graded separately, so the more you tell us, the more closely the price reflects what’s there.

How do I get today’s price for my scrap?

Call 01942 906041 or send us a few photos through the quote form with a rough weight or volume. Scrap prices follow the metals markets and change from day to day, so we price on what you actually have at the time, by grade, rather than quoting a figure that could be out of date tomorrow.

How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?

By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.

Do you collect from site?

Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.

What have you got? (tick any)
For example: about two tonnes of armoured cable drum ends, ready now. Or: a strip-out starting next month with stainless ducting and steelwork, skips needed on site.
A couple of photos of the scrap, close enough to see what it is, help us price it.
