A roll-on roll-off container loaded with heavy scrap metal

Looking for scrap metal merchants near you who will come to your site? Resilient Contracting is a licensed scrap metal dealer based at Martland Park, Wigan, and arranges collections from businesses and trades across the North West, from Liverpool and Warrington to Bolton, Manchester and Preston.

Selling scrap metal should be simple. Say what you’ve got and give us a rough idea of quantity. We suggest the containers, arrange the collection and grade every load, and you see the weight, grade and price before the money arrives by bank transfer.

Price

How your scrap is valued

Three things set the value: the metal, its grade and the market. Copper, aluminium and the nickel in stainless follow the London Metal Exchange, steel follows demand from steelworks, and both move daily. Clean, separated scrap grades higher. Attached steel, plastic, oil or rubbish bring it down.

Then there is the collection itself, which depends on what you have, how much and where. Before anything is booked, we agree whether the metal value is paid to you or set against the collection.

Typical trade and business loads

  • Electricians’ drum ends and rip-out cable
  • Plumbers’ copper pipe, cylinders and brass
  • Roofers’ sheet lead and flashing
  • Fabrication offcuts and skeletons
  • Machine shop swarf and bar ends
  • Catering sinks, benches and canopies
  • Old racking, shelving and lockers
  • Radiators and cast iron pipe
  • Redundant machinery, drained of oil
  • Aluminium frames with the glass out

Not for a scrap collection

  • Vehicles and car shells (an authorised treatment facility)
  • Gas cylinders (back to the supplier)
  • Lead-acid batteries (tell us first; it needs a specialist route)
  • Fridges and AC units (electrical waste, collected separately)
  • Drums or tanks with oil or chemical residue (tell us first; it needs a specialist route)
  • General rubbish mixed in with the metal (a separate waste collection)

Collection

Containers for your scrap

Set up around your site and the amount you produce, so each metal stays in its own grade until it is collected.

  • Cages

Lockable steel cages for cable, copper and brass, secure on site until collection.

  • Bins and drums

For swarf, small non-ferrous and offcuts, one metal per container.

  • Bulk bags

Easy to place anywhere, for smaller amounts of cable, fittings or turnings.

  • Roll-on/roll-off skips

For steel, plant and bulky scrap in volume, exchanged when full.

Why it matters

Why sell to a licensed merchant

Only a licensed dealer can lawfully buy your scrap. Wigan Council issued our site licence, SML/S0042, and our Environment Agency registration, CBDU581935, covers carrying, brokering and dealing in waste at upper tier. Look both up on the public registers before anything leaves site.

The law protects honest sellers. Dealers must verify who they buy from, record every load and pay by bank transfer, never cash. Your scrap is still waste when it leaves, so it needs a waste transfer note. An unlicensed cash buyer gives you none of that and puts your duty of care at risk.

How it works

From a phone call to money in the bank

Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.

  1. Call or send photos

What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.

  2. Collection arranged

A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.

  3. Weighed and graded

Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.

  4. Paid by bank transfer

Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

FAQs

Scrap metal collection questions

All questions

Is scrap metal collection free?

That comes down to the load, so we won’t promise free collection before we know what you have. With a worthwhile amount of sorted metal, the value of the scrap is paid to you or set against the collection. A small, mixed or distant load may carry a charge. Send photos and a rough quantity, and we will tell you which applies.

How much scrap do we need before you collect?

There is no fixed minimum, but quantity changes the sums. A cage of copper or brass can justify a collection on its own, while a few lengths of steel usually won’t. If your scrap builds up slowly, a container on site lets it grow into a sensible load. Give us a rough idea of your output and we can suggest a set-up.

How do I sell scrap metal as a business?

Send a description, a rough quantity and your site location, ideally with a few photos. We agree the containers and the collection, then weigh and grade the load. We verify your business name and address, as the law requires, and take bank details for payment. You get the weight, grade and price in writing, plus a waste transfer note.

Are you scrap metal merchants near me?

Very likely, if you are in the North West. We are a licensed dealer at Martland Park, Wigan, and collections are arranged across Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire, plus Warrington. Further afield, a big load or a strip-out can still make sense, so call 01942 906041 and describe the load and the location.

Do you buy scrap metal from businesses?

Yes. Resilient Contracting holds a scrap metal dealer’s site licence from Wigan Council (SML/S0042). We buy scrap cable, copper, brass, aluminium, lead, stainless, swarf and steel from businesses and trades, and pay by bank transfer once the metal has been weighed and graded.

How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?

By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.

Do you collect from site?

Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.

Do we get paperwork for our scrap?

Yes. Scrap metal leaving a business is waste in law, so the duty of care applies and each transfer needs a waste transfer note, kept for at least two years. You also get a record of the weight, grade and price of what we buy.

Can you handle our other waste as well as the scrap?

Yes. As a recycling brokerage we can arrange general waste, dry mixed recycling, cardboard, food, wood and electrical waste collections through registered collectors, so the whole site is covered with one contact.
