Scrap metal collection and buying in Preston

Preston and Leyland have built trams, aircraft parts and lorries. We buy the scrap metal their engineering firms produce today, and collect it from site.

Preston’s engineering runs deep. Dick, Kerr & Co built trams on Strand Road and in 1918 became one of the founding companies of English Electric, and the old tram factory made aircraft components until 1992. A few miles south, Leyland Motors grew into Leyland Trucks, which builds DAF lorries in the town. The supply chain around that work fills the estates of Preston and South Ribble with machine shops, fabricators and electrical firms.

Resilient Contracting buys their scrap: swarf and bar ends from CNC shops, offcuts and skeletons from laser cutting, cable from installers and structural steel from strip-outs. We collect from site, grade every metal separately and pay by bank transfer. Photos of what you produce are the quickest way to a price.

Leyland’s engineering belt and the estates north of the city

Lancashire Business Park on Centurion Way was originally the home of Leyland Motors, and alongside Leyland Business Park, Farington Park and the Moss Side Industrial Estate it is home to manufacturers and engineering firms of every size. Titan Business Park sits on the old Leyland test track. Vehicle builders and their suppliers produce steel pressings and offcuts, aluminium, copper and machining swarf, often in volumes that justify a roll-on roll-off container.

North of the city, Eastway Business Park is close to junction 31A of the M6 and junction 1 of the M55, and Caxton Road in Fulwood and the Ribbleton Lane Trading Estate hold trade and industrial units. With outline consent granted for the Lancashire Central employment site at Cuerden, more new units are coming, and every fit-out leaves cable drum ends, cable tray and pipe offcuts behind.

How it works

From a phone call to money in the bank

Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.

  1. Call or send photos

What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.

  2. Collection arranged

A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.

  3. Weighed and graded

Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.

  4. Paid by bank transfer

Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

How selling your scrap works

FAQs

Selling scrap in Preston: questions

All questions

We run CNC machines in a unit near Leyland. Will you take swarf as well as solids?

Yes. Turnings and solids are graded differently, so keep them apart: swarf in lidded, leak-tight bins at the machines, bar ends and offcuts in a stillage or cage. Split the metals too, because aluminium, brass and stainless swarf are each worth more on their own than mixed in with steel. Drain off as much coolant as you can before collection.

We’re a Preston electrical contractor working on jobs across Lancashire. Can you collect from the job?

Yes. Contractors often have scrap building up on several jobs at once, such as cable and tray from a factory rewire in one place and switchgear from a plant room in another. We can collect from the job as it finishes or from your own yard once you’ve gathered it, and each purchase is paid by bank transfer with a record of weight and grade.

How do I get today’s price for my scrap?

Call 01942 906041 or send us a few photos through the quote form with a rough weight or volume. Scrap prices follow the metals markets and change from day to day, so we price on what you actually have at the time, by grade, rather than quoting a figure that could be out of date tomorrow.

How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?

By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.

Do you collect from site?

Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.

What have you got? (tick any)
For example: about two tonnes of armoured cable drum ends, ready now. Or: a strip-out starting next month with stainless ducting and steelwork, skips needed on site.
A couple of photos of the scrap, close enough to see what it is, help us price it.
