Resilient Contracting is a Wigan business, and our scrap metal site licence is issued by Wigan Council for Unit 11 at Martland Park. The council describes Martland Park as the largest employment area in the borough, and it sits a few miles from junction 26 of the M6, where the M58 joins it. Being this close helps when a cage of cable needs collecting or a skip of steel needs swapping.

We buy from electricians and M&E firms, engineers, fabricators, demolition and strip-out contractors and facilities teams across the borough, from Standish to Ashton-in-Makerfield and Hindley. Each metal is graded separately, the seller’s details are checked in line with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, and payment goes by bank transfer. Ring us or send photos for a price on the day.

Iron, hinges and the estates that came after

Wigan’s metal story starts at Kirkless, where the Wigan Coal and Iron Company built its ironworks in 1858 and was running ten blast furnaces by 1880. Ashton-in-Makerfield was known for hinges, locks, files and nails. The furnaces have gone, but the skills moved into smaller workshops: fabricators, machine shops, steel erectors and the contractors who wire and plumb the borough’s buildings.

North of the centre, the Bradley Hall Trading Estate in Standish sits near junction 27, with Leyland Mill Lane, Miry Lane and Gidlow Lane closer in. To the south and east are Warrington Road at Goose Green, Makerfield Way and Rose Bridge in Ince, Greenbank in Hindley and Lockett Business Park in Ashton. Between them they produce the full range: steel offcuts, stainless from food and process work, copper and cable from electricians, and swarf from CNC shops.

Metal cages for keeping scrap separated on a customer site

How it works

From a phone call to money in the bank

Say what the metal is and give us a rough weight or a skip size. A photo or two speeds it up. You will know how it will be priced before anything moves.

  1. Call or send photos

What the metal is, how it is mixed, roughly how much and where it is. A few photos usually tell us most of it.

  2. Collection arranged

A one-off pick-up, or cages, bins or a skip on site so it can be kept apart as it comes out.

  3. Weighed and graded

Each metal is weighed and graded for what it is, so clean copper is not paid as mixed scrap.

  4. Paid by bank transfer

Payment against the weights and grades, with a waste transfer note for the load.

FAQs

Selling scrap in Wigan: questions

All questions

Can we bring scrap to your site at Martland Park?

Please call us before you set off rather than turning up. We’re set up around collecting from customers’ own premises, with cages, bins or a skip left on site for the purpose, and we’ll tell you on the phone how we can best take your load. However it reaches us, every purchase is recorded against your business and paid by bank transfer.

We fabricate in both stainless and mild steel at a unit in Standish. Can the offcuts share a skip?

Keep them apart. Stainless carries chromium and nickel, so it’s graded and priced well above mild steel, but only while it stays separate. Give stainless its own bin or stillage, split 304 from 316 if you cut both, and keep the skip for mild steel offcuts and laser skeletons. Label the containers so new starters don’t mix them on a busy day.

How do I get today’s price for my scrap?

Call 01942 906041 or send us a few photos through the quote form with a rough weight or volume. Scrap prices follow the metals markets and change from day to day, so we price on what you actually have at the time, by grade, rather than quoting a figure that could be out of date tomorrow.

How will we be paid? Can you pay cash?

By bank transfer. Paying cash for scrap metal has been illegal in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so any dealer still offering cash is breaking the law. You get a record of what was weighed, the grade and the price, so the payment is easy to reconcile in your accounts.

Do you collect from site?

Yes. We arrange collections from business and trade sites, and can leave cages, bins, bulk bags or a roll-on roll-off skip on site so metals are kept apart as they come out. Tell us what you produce and how much, and we will suggest the right set-up and collection frequency.

What have you got? (tick any)
For example: about two tonnes of armoured cable drum ends, ready now. Or: a strip-out starting next month with stainless ducting and steelwork, skips needed on site.
A couple of photos of the scrap, close enough to see what it is, help us price it.
